Deathworthy

For the National Law University, Delhi, with Studio Novel

A landmark legal report exposing the mental health crisis on India’s death row. Designed to engage judges and policymakers, the publication balances gravity with clarity—transforming dense research into an accessible and emotionally resonant reading experience. Honoured by the Art Directors Club and Communication Arts for its design impact

The Exterior

Deathworthy uses a stamp-like debossed cover to reflect how inmates are bureaucratically marked for death. A single line morphs into a signature across the book—symbolizing sentencing and lost individuality. Four custom bookmarks feature life-affirming legal rulings, interrupting the reader to foreground the law’s voice. Minimal, tactile, and symbolic, the design balances institutional weight with human dignity.

The Interior

The interior layout adopts a strong, structured typographic system that reinforces the gravity of the subject. A bold stencil-style “stamp” effect is consistently used for section headings and chapter openings, referencing the bureaucratic violence inherent in death penalty sentencing.

Dual Narrative Structures

The report intentionally contrasts legal analysis with lived experience through distinct typographic and spatial treatments. Legal content follows a formal, structured layout, while inmate narratives appear as vignettes—in a distinct typeface—to foreground emotional weight. This layered approach invites readers to engage with legal systems and personal stories in parallel.
